USB Disk Security - Protect your PC from USB threats
An antivirus software may work nice and well, but USB Disk Security focuses on a particular aspect of securing your PC: USB threats. Once you introduce a USB device in your PC, you can never know what crazy things you may have unleashed.
The installation package is almost 6 Mb in size and will do what it's supposed to in no time at all. It's a standard installation wizard which you only need to tell where to put the program and what shortcuts do you want placed.
Covering a single aspect of PC security, the software's interface is not much to look at. It's a window that features large chunky buttons. That's all there is to it. There are no menus to scroll through, check boxes or anything. Just tell it what to do, it's that simple.
USB Disk Security's functions are organized in separate menus according to their type. First you have a shield which works like a standard anti virus software. It monitors, in real time, any USB device that's been plugged into your machine. Once you do this, a window will pop up near the system tray which will tell you if the device is secured or not.
Another function is a USB scan which does exactly what it sounds like. It scans your USB drive for possible threats. It doesn't recognize just clear threats, but it will also tell you that a certain file on that drive looks suspicious, if this is the case. An important feature of the program is data protection. You can prevent unauthorized persons from copying your data to a USB drive or prevent them from even connecting them to your machine. Just click the "lock" button and set a password. If only the villains in spy movies had this program...
You also have a few system tools like disk cleanup, system repair, an auto start list which displays applications that are executed during system start-up and the software's own quarantine function.
pro:
USB Disk Security acts like a normal anti virus software, but it's much more easier to use and it doesn't milk your computer for resources. You can have it running in the system tray and it won't make any trouble for any other anti virus programs. You won't even notice it unless it detects a threat on a USB drive.
con:
Not having any configuration options may also be a bad thing because it makes you feel like you're not in control. But then again, it doesn't need any of those options. Just let it do it's job. Also, USB Disk Security is not free and the USB protection feature won't work in the trail version, but if you purchase it, you will get free updates for life.
USB Disk Security is the software that focuses on offline threats that may come from an unverified USB drive.
